Preface
This publication represents a standard for safe operation, substantial and durable construction and performance testing of thermally activated pressure relief devices for compressed hydrogen vehicle fuel containers, for the on-board storage of compressed hydrogen for vehicle operation within limitations given below and in the scope of this standard.

This standard is based on proven engineering principles, research and the combined expertise of gas utilities, manufacturers, users, and others having specialized experience.

Preface
This is the first edition of ANSI HGV 3.1, Fuel system components for compressed hydrogen gas powered vehicles. This precedes CSA HGV 3.1-2013.

Scope

This Standard establishes requirements for newly produced compressed hydrogen gas fuel system components, intended for use on hydrogen gas powered vehicles as listed below:

a) check valves;

b) manual valves;

c) manual container valves;

1 Scope
1.1 These requirements cover battery chargers rated 600 volts or less. They are intended to be used in accordance with the National Electrical Code, NFPA 70, to charge industrial storage batteries which are used to provide power for material handling trucks, tractors, personnel carriers, and similar motive equipment. These chargers may be either cord and plug connected or permanently connected.

This SAE Standard defines a minimum set of acceptable safety criteria for a lithium-based rechargeable battery system to be considered for use in a vehicle propulsion application as an energy storage system connected to a high voltage power train. While the objective is a safe battery system when installed into a vehicle application, this Standard is primarily focused, wherever possible, on conditions which can be evaluated utilizing the battery system alone.

ISO 6469-2:2018 specifies requirements for operational safety specific to electrically propelled road vehicles, for the protection of persons inside and outside the vehicle.
NOTE 1 Relevant requirements for motorcycles and mopeds are described in ISO 13063.
ISO 6469-2:2018 does not provide comprehensive safety information for manufacturing, maintenance and repair personnel.
ISO 6469-2:2018 does not consider specific aspects of driving automation features.
NOTE 2 For definition of the term "driving automation features", see SAE J3016.

ISO 12405-3:2014 specifies test procedures and provides acceptable safety requirements for voltage class B lithium-ion battery packs and systems, to be used as traction batteries in electrically propelled road vehicles. Traction battery packs and systems used for two-wheel or three-wheel vehicles are not covered by ISO 12405-3:2014. ISO 12405-3:2014 is related to the testing of safety performance of battery packs and systems for their intended use in a vehicle.

This standard is intended to demonstrate and document the control of the potential hazards from lithium cells or batteries (UN 3090 and 3480) when transported as cargo on aircraft. [still need to identify if we are addressing global (external fire) or local (battery internal failures)] This standard addresses the need to control the hazards which might arise from a failure from an individual cell by containing the hazards within the package. This specific hazards addressed within this standard are: • Uncontrolled fire • Rapid overpressure pulse within compartment

The National Fire Code of Canada 2015 (NFC), published by NRC and developed by the Canadian Commission on Building and Fire Codes, sets out the technical provisions regulating activities related to the construction, use or demolition of buildings and facilities, the condition of specific elements of buildings and facilities, and the design or construction of specific elements of facilities related to certain hazards as well as the protection measures for the current or intended use of buildings.
