Grid Interconnection

This Code covers basic provisions for safeguarding of persons from hazards arising from the installation, operation, or maintenance of conductors and equipment in electric supply stations and overhead and underground electric supply and communication lines. It also includes work rules for the construction, maintenance, and operation of electric supply and communication lines and equipment. The standard is applicable to the systems and equipment operated by utilities, or similar systems and equipment, of an industrial establishment or complex under the control of qualified persons.

1.1 These requirements cover inverters, converters, charge controllers, and interconnection system equipment (ISE) intended for use in stand-alone (not grid-connected) or utility-interactive (grid-connected) power systems. 1.2 For utility-interactive equipment, these requirements are intended to supplement and be used in conjunction with the Standard for Interconnecting Distributed Resources With Electric Power Systems, IEEE 1547, and the Standard for Conformance Test Procedures for Equipment Interconnecting Distributed Resources with Electric Power Systems, IEEE 1547.1.

This Standard specifies the requirements for grid protection devices intended to be used in inverter energy systems, with ratings up to 10 kVA for single-phase units, or up to 30 kVA for three-phase units, and for the injection of electric power through an electrical installation to the electricity distribution network. NOTES: 1 Although this Standard does not apply to larger systems, similar principles can be used for the grid protection of such systems. 2 These devices do not replace devices used for protection and/or isolation as required in AS/NZS 3000.

This standard specifies the type, production, and commissioning tests that shall be performed to demonstrate that the interconnection functions and equipment of a distributed resource (DR) conform to IEEE Standard P1547; Interconnection equipment that connects distributed resources (DR) to an electric power system (EPS) must meet the requirements specified in IEEE Standard P1547. Standardized test procedures are necessary to establish and verify compliance with those requirements.

IEEE Std 1547.2-2008 provides application details to support the understanding of IEEE Std 1547-2003 and is intended to serve DR owners and operators as well as area EPS staff. It provides technical background, application details and guidance, requirements rationale, schematics, and examples to facilitate the use of IEEE std 1547-2003. This guide addresses some topics that are related to DR project implementation to enhance user understanding of how IEEE Std 1547-2003 may relate.

Recommendations and guidance for distributed resources (DR) interconnected on the distribution secondary networks, including both spot networks and grid networks, are provided. This document gives an overview of distribution secondary network systems design, components, and operation; describes considerations for interconnecting DR with networks; and provides potential solutions for the interconnection of DR on network distribution systems. IEEE Std 1547.6-2011 is part of the IEEE 1547™ series of standards.

IEEE Std 1547.7™ is part of the IEEE 1547™ series of standards. Whereas IEEE Std 1547™-2003 provides mandatory requirements for the interconnection of distributed resources (DR) with electric power systems (EPS), this guide does not presume the interconnection is IEEE 1547™ compliant. Further, this guide does not interpret IEEE Std 1547™ or other standards in the IEEE 1547™ series, and this guide does not provide additional requirements or recommended practices related to the other IEEE 1547™ documents.
