The technical specifications for, and testing of, the interconnection between utility electric power systems (EPS) and distributed energy resources (DER) are the focus of this standard. It provides requirements relevant to the performance, operation, testing, safety considerations, and maintenance of the interconnection. It also includes general requirements, response to abnormal conditions, power quality, islanding, and test specifications and requirements for design, production, installation evaluation, commissioning, and periodic tests.

This standard covers the safety and performance of distributed energy resource systems. These systems may be comprised of distributed energy sources such as photovoltaic arrays or wind turbines in homogenous or hybrid configurations, energy storage systems, grid interface equipment and related equipment to accomplish functionality of the distributed energy system.

EV batteries still have storage capacity, typically at 80 percent, after they’re removed from their vehicles and can be reclaimed for a “second life” as stationary power sources. This should reduce the need for additional power production and shrinking landfill waste.

In June 2015, the ASME Council on Standards and Certification approved the creation of a new Standards Committee on Safety Standards for Thermal Energy Storage Systems (TES).

Methods for qualifying static battery chargers and inverters for Class 1E installations outside containment in nuclear power generating stations are described. These methods may also be used to qualify similar electronic equipment for use in applications outside containment, where specific standards for such equipment are not available. The qualification methods set forth employ a combination of type testing and analysis, the latter including a justification of methods, theories, and assumptions used. These procedures meet the requirements of IEEE Std 323™-2003
